WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Energy said on Wednesday it is ready to draw down crude oil from the nation’s emergency reserve if President Donald Trump determines the oil would help refiners deal with any damage caused by Hurricane Laura in the petroleum hub along the Texas and Louisiana coasts.

Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette is ready to assist in response and recovery efforts “including the potential to authorize use of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, if directed by President Trump,” Deputy Secretary Mark Menezes said in a statement. The center of Laura, now a Category 4 hurricane, is forecast to move over northwestern Louisiana on Thursday. (Reporting by Timothy Gardner and Nichola Groom, Editing by Franklin Paul)
